Republican Congressman Andy Ogles has introduced a resolution to amend the US Constitution, seeking to allow former President Donald Trump to run for a third term in office.
Ogles, who submitted the proposal on Thursday, argued that Trump is uniquely qualified to address the nation’s challenges and restore its global stature.
“He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness. He must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal,” Ogles said.
Currently, the 22nd Amendment prohibits any individual from being elected president more than twice.
Ogles stressed the need for extraordinary measures to counteract the current administration’s policies.
“We must provide Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration,” he added.
While Trump had dismissed the idea of a third term, he joked about the possibility after winning the 2024 election, saying, “Unless you say, ‘he’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’”
Ogles also lauded Trump’s executive actions during his second term, highlighting his stances on border security, energy production, gender identity policies, and the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization.
The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms, limits presidents to two terms to prevent excessive executive power.
Roosevelt’s tenure from 1933 to 1945 had sparked debates on the balance of power in government.
To pass Ogles’ proposed amendment, it would require not only a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress but also ratification by three-fourths of the states—an uphill battle given the current slim Republican majority in the House.
