A yet-to-be-identified man met his untimely death while allegedly attempting to vandalize a transformer in the Akute area of Ogun State.
The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday. According to her, the suspect was electrocuted while trying to cut wires inside the transformer house, a facility that had reportedly been targeted by thieves in the past.
The chairman of the Irewole community, Rasheed Ajagbe, reported the incident to the police. He stated that for some time, the community had been grappling with repeated theft and damage to electrical wires from their power transformer.
Ajagbe revealed that around 7 a.m. on Friday, he received a call prompting him and other community executives to inspect the transformer. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of the suspect, who appeared to have been electrocuted during his attempt to vandalize the equipment.
Police detectives visited the scene to investigate and documented the incident with photographs. The Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) was also notified, and the suspect’s body was transported to the General Hospital Ifo mortuary for an autopsy and preservation.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from tampering with electrical installations, warning that such actions not only endanger lives but also disrupt community power supply.
