A congress aimed at gathering input from Ogoni residents on oil exploration turned chaotic on Saturday as frustrated youths staged a protest over what they described as a lack of transparency in the consultation process.

The meeting, held at the Peace and Freedom Centre in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, was meant to engage residents from Khana, Gokana, Tai, and Eleme LGAs. However, by 1 PM, the venue became overcrowded, forcing organizers to relocate to an open field.

Among the dignitaries present were Senator Barry Mpigo (Rivers South-East), APC Deputy National Chairman Chief Victor Giadom, former Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) President Ledum Mitee, and Ogoni Dialogue Committee Co-Chairman Ignatius Kattey.

The meeting, which started around 2 PM, lasted less than an hour. Leaders, including Mitee and Kattey, gave brief remarks, while Senator Mpigo emphasized unity and peace among the Ogoni people. However, shortly after their speeches, the dignitaries left, leaving many attendees feeling sidelined.

This sparked an uproar among the youth, who waved placards and demanded a more inclusive process. A youth leader from Khana LGA, identified as Emma, criticized the handling of the congress, stating:

How can they invite people from four LGAs to a small venue and expect meaningful discussions? They should have started at the kingdom or LGA level before holding a larger congress.”

The abrupt and disorganized conclusion of the meeting has fueled concerns over whether Ogoni residents will be adequately consulted before any decision on oil exploration is finalized.
