A violent clash between rival terrorist factions, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and the Bakoura-led Boko Haram, has resulted in heavy casualties in Borno State.

The confrontation took place east of Mallam Fatori, near the Niger Republic border, as both groups continue their long-standing battle for dominance in the region.

Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the intensity of the fight, stating, “Dozens of terrorists were killed on both sides, with several others sustaining severe injuries.”

Reports suggest that the latest clash has significantly weakened the operational strength of both factions, exposing their hideouts and disrupting their activities.

The two groups have been locked in a bitter rivalry over territorial control. This confrontation has further diminished their capabilities,” Makama added.

The deadly infighting comes shortly after ISWAP conducted a mass burial for fighters killed in an airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force on March 19 in Mafa Local Government Area. The funeral was held on Sunday in the villages of Talwari and Muktari in Konduga Local Government Area.

The Nigerian military continues its counter-terrorism operations in the region, targeting hideouts and eliminating insurgents in an effort to restore stability to the northeast.
