The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the escape of two suspects linked to the murder of Justice Azuka, a state House of Assembly member.

Azuka was abducted by gunmen on Christmas Eve while heading home for the festivities.

His lifeless body was discovered earlier this month on the Second Niger Bridge.

Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga announced the suspects’ escape in a statement on Tuesday night, revealing that they had been assisting with investigations but managed to flee during an operation to apprehend a receiver of stolen vehicles used by the criminal gang.

According to Ikenga, “During the onslaught operation by the operatives, the suspect (the receiver) was arrested, and two vehicles suspected to have been snatched from the unsuspecting members of the public were recovered. Unfortunately, the other two suspects fled the scene.”

Anambra Police Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu has since deployed “human, operational, and intelligence assets” to track down and re-arrest the fugitives.

He has also ordered “immediate disciplinary action” against officers whose negligence may have contributed to the escape.
