The Supreme Court has nullified the local government elections conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on October 5, 2024, declaring the exercise invalid.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Jamilu Tukur ruled that the election was void due to gross violations of the Electoral Act.

Reading the verdict, Justice Tukur stated, “The action of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission is declared void for lack of substantial compliance with the Electoral Act and guidelines, as the electoral body continued voter registration even after announcing an election date.”

The court further held that the processes leading to the election were unlawfully abridged, breaching Section 150 of the Electoral Act.
