President Bola Tinubu’s special adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has made it known that Peter Obi will leave the Labour Party (LP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on TVC’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, March 12, 2024, Bwala argued that Obi would follow in the footsteps of his close associate, Valentine Ozigbo, who recently defected to the APC.
“Do you know we are emptying the Labour Party, not because we asked them to come but because they are coming? Valentine Ozigbo has joined us. Balami has joined us, even Peter Obi will join us. Peter Obi will not run on the Labour Party; we are all leaving the party.
“For Valentine Ozigbo to come to our party, Ozigbo is actually the custodian of Peter Obi, then, I know for a fact that Peter Obi will join us,” Bwala claimed.
Three weeks ago, Ozigbo resigned from the LP, citing internal crises within the party.
Shortly after joining the APC, he expressed hope that Obi might also make the switch.
“I told him a few things, not about coming to the APC, but I would like to welcome him to the APC someday if he so desires,” Ozigbo said.
Meanwhile, speculation has been rife that Obi could move to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to support a proposed coalition against the APC.
Talks of his possible defection gained traction following the recent departure of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the APC to the SDP.
Despite the rumours, Obi has remained silent on his political future, even as the LP has pledged to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the Southeast.
