Former President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerian leaders to prioritise the welfare of citizens over personal interests, declaring that leadership is both a challenge and an opportunity to serve.
Receiving All Progressives Congress (APC) governors at his Kaduna residence during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, Buhari said, “I left office as the President with the same physical assets I had before my election.”
He stressed the need for a citizen-first approach to governance, noting that national development depends on the choices leaders make while in office.
Buhari also expressed satisfaction with the work of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), commending their dedication to Nigeria’s progress.
He appreciated the Bola Tinubu administration for renovating his home, saying, “While the building looked very much the same externally, so much improvement was made inside.”
The former president thanked the governors for the visit, noting that while he had worked closely with many of them, some were new faces.
Earlier, PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, said their visit was to pay homage and express gratitude for Buhari’s service.
“Many of us recall with pride the principled role you played in the founding of the APC. That legacy continues to shape our party’s identity direction,” Uzodinma said in a statement issued by Buhari’s former media aide, Garba Shehu.
He added, “Your Excellency, your legacy in Nigerian history is secure. You remain the only opposition candidate in our nation’s history to have defeated an incumbent. You did not only win power, you governed with calm resolve and handed over, with honour, to another APC president. For this, we are extremely grateful.”
Uzodinma highlighted Buhari’s strides in security, anti-corruption, and infrastructure development.
“Your administration gave expression to our party’s core principles… You brought dignity to governance and deepened the progressive ethos of our party.”
He also praised Buhari’s recent endorsement of President Tinubu, saying, “Your public endorsement of him in your recent birthday message was a powerful symbol of continuity and humility.”
Wrapping up, Uzodinma said, “We ask you to continue to support and guide us… and ensure that APC continues to be in power for a more prosperous Nigeria.”
