The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar III, has ignited strong reactions following his controversial declaration that social media should be treated as a “terrorist organisation.”
Speaking on Wednesday in a video shared by News Central, the revered traditional ruler condemned the unchecked spread of falsehoods online and called on security agencies to take decisive action.
“What happened has happened. You cannot come and be doing social media because that is one terrorist organisation.
Social media is a terrorist organisation. What they do; somebody will sit down in his comfort zone and formulate stories, and you will discover that it is not true,” the Sultan stated.
He warned that the ease with which misinformation is circulated online poses a serious threat to societal peace and cohesion.
“So, social media is a terrorist organisation that we must deal with. Security agencies must deal with this terrorist organisation called social media,” he reiterated.
