At just 13 years old, Michelle Ibidapo, a promising swimmer and student of The Grange School, Ikeja, has made waves at the Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival by winning gold in the women’s 1,500m freestyle event, proudly representing Team Oyo.

Michelle’s rise to national prominence began at the National Youth Games held in Asaba, where her impressive performance marked her as a talent to watch. Since then, she has rapidly advanced through Nigeria’s sports development ranks, culminating in this standout achievement at the country’s flagship multi-sport competition.

Speaking after her victory in Shagamu, Michelle revealed the mindset that powered her success: “I came into this competition with a clear goal — to win a medal, though I wasn’t certain which colour. In the last lap, I told myself to stay focused, and thankfully, it turned out to be gold.”

Her victory not only highlights her personal dedication and skill but also showcases the vital role the Youth Games play in identifying young talents and providing them with a pathway to shine on Nigeria’s biggest sporting stages.

As Michelle continues her ascent, many are watching closely, hopeful that this young athlete will inspire a new generation of swimmers and elevate Nigerian swimming to greater heights.
