Prominent constitutional lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, has warned that the prevailing economic hardship and rising public frustration under President Bola Tinubu’s administration could be enough to deny him re-election in 2027.

Ozekhome made the remarks while reacting to reports of a potential political alliance between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi — a move that has reignited talks of a united opposition front.

According to the legal luminary, Tinubu’s continued hold on power is not guaranteed if disenchanted Nigerians rally behind a strong, unified alternative.

“With the misery and disenchantment on the ground, a powerful force can ease him (Tinubu) out of power.

“But the forces are massive, with Tinubu controlling virtually every apparatus of state power,” Ozekhome said.

He called for opposition blocs to consolidate ahead of the next elections, stressing the need for a two-party dominance similar to the U.S. political system.

“We should have such a template where there is no dominant power bloc,” he added.

Ozekhome’s comments come at a time of increasing economic pressure, with inflation, unemployment, and the cost of living at historic highs — challenges critics and political observers say could weaken Tinubu’s re-election prospects if left unaddressed.
