Segun Sowunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign, has asserted his political independence and praised President Bola Tinubu’s strategic political intelligence over his rivals.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Sowunmi addressed public speculation surrounding his recent visit to President Tinubu, stressing that it should not be misinterpreted as a betrayal of his relationship with Atiku.

“I am at liberty as an adult to take decisions. I am not tied to anybody. I am not anti-Tinubu. I own my mouth, I own my words, and I own my arguments,” he stated.

Highlighting Tinubu’s political edge, Sowunmi said, “Do you know the difference between Bola and them? He doesn’t have one approach to dealing with everybody. By miles, he (Tinubu) is smarter than them. He is smarter than Peter Obi, he is smarter than them.”

Sowunmi joins a growing list of Atiku’s former allies who have moved closer to the presidency.

In November 2024, Daniel Bwala – also a former Atiku spokesman and once a fierce critic of Tinubu–was appointed as Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication after his own meeting with Tinubu.
