Paul Ibe, spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is rattled by the prospect of a united opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ibe’s comments came in response to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, who recently dismissed the planned opposition coalition—led by Atiku and other key political figures—as doomed to fail.
But speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Ibe said the ruling camp is deliberately pushing a negative narrative around the coalition due to growing anxiety about its potential impact.
He called on Nigerians to remain focused and committed to the goal of removing the APC-led government from office in the next election cycle.
“Nigerians should keep their eyes on the ball; they should be focused. Better days are coming, but we need to work for it, and that work has to start with ensuring that this administration is shown the exit door (in 2027),” he said.
Ibe further emphasized the need for opposition parties to remain united, insisting that the growing attention around the coalition only exposes the ruling party’s fear.
“A united opposition is key to all of that. All of the things that are happening, that it (the coalition) is not going to work is because they are already scared, they are scared of the prospect of the coalition. Otherwise, why has that become a talking point? Whether it succeeds or not is not their business.”
When asked to assess Tinubu’s government so far, Ibe offered a blunt verdict, “It’s a total failure.”
He accused the administration of prioritizing the 2027 election over the urgent task of governance.
“It’s all about 2027, focus on the job, focus on governance, make life meaningful and better for Nigerians, and make food affordable. Let there be security of lives and property which is the primary responsibility of any government,” Ibe added.
