A UK-based Nigerian care worker, Bilikesu Olagunju, has been exposed in a disturbing video showing her violently abusing 88-year-old dementia patient John Attard—just days before the elderly man died.
According to a report by Mail Online on Monday, the incident took place on Christmas Eve 2022 at the victim’s residence in Bexley, Kent.
Olagunju, who had only been on the job for six days under employment with Unique Personnel UK, was secretly recorded by a hidden camera installed by the victim’s son, Chris Attard.
The footage captured Olagunju aggressively stripping the elderly man, ignoring his cries of pain, and issuing threats.
“Maybe I will beat you up. I will flog you. I will take you to the GP to get injections. I will call the police on you,” she is heard saying in the footage.
The video further revealed Olagunju pouring marmalade into the pensioner’s coffee, despite being aware he was diabetic. She also forcibly dragged him by his collar and arm, causing him visible distress.
On Christmas morning, just hours after the abuse, Mr. Attard was discovered unresponsive with blood running down his face. He was rushed to the hospital and remained unconscious until his death ten days later.
Although a post-mortem report could not conclusively link the abuse to his death, the traumatic events led to public outrage after the footage surfaced.
Olagunju pleaded guilty to one count of ill-treatment or wilful neglect of a person lacking mental capacity and was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court in south-east London. She received a six-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months and was ordered to perform 50 hours of unpaid community service.
Following the sentencing, Chris Attard expressed his dismay at what he called a lenient punishment.
“If those cameras had not been there, that person could still be out there treating elderly people like this,” he said.
“I was expecting a suspended sentence, but the length and community service aspect is an insult. What kind of a deterrent is that?”
