Former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has made a dramatic U-turn on his earlier allegations against the perceived authoritarian actions of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

MUK TV recalls that El-Rufai, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the build-up to the 2023 elections, accused Peter Obi of arresting and detaining him in Anambra in 2013 while Obi was Governor of the state.

In his allegation, which was intended to damage Obi’s reputation in favour of his then party’s candidate, President Bola Tinubu, El-Rufai, while speaking at an interactive session of the Arewa Joint Committee, claimed he was arrested during a bye-election in Anambra, where he had gone as an APC observer.

He said, “In 2013, I went to Anambra State as an official of the APC to witness the bye-election for governorship.

“Your next guest, Peter Obi, as governor, got me arrested and detained for 48 hours in my hotel room.”

However, in a dramatic turn of events, the former Kaduna Governor, whose political interest now aligns with Obi through the coalition, says Obi’s detention of him was in the interest of democracy.

“I was once detained by Peter Obi in Anambra for 48 hours. Getting close to him now has made me understand he did it for democracy, and together we shall save democracy.

“How many times did Jesus ask us to forgive those who offend us again? Peter Obi is like a brother to me,” he said.
