Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has admitted his team faced a difficult challenge against Botswana at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The tactician also confirmed plans to rotate his squad for their final group game of the 2024 WAFCON tournament against Algeria.

Speaking during the post-match press conference after Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Botswana, Madugu said:

It was a tough and highly competitive game. The Botswana girls were very spirited and determined. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy.

“Every game has its own strategy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. That’s why we make changes when things aren’t working. Not every player will have a good day, but we got better in the second half and converted one of our chances.”

With Nigeria already through to the quarterfinals after securing six points from two games, Madugu confirmed that changes are expected in the squad for the Algeria clash.

It is always a work in progress. Even if we score 10 goals, there will still be things to improve.

“We’ll definitely make some changes in the last game against Algeria. Not because we’re fielding a weaker team — all our players are capable — but because we need to manage the squad carefully, knowing we have up to six games to play in this tournament. It’s important to rest some players and give others opportunities.”

Madugu also admitted that Nigeria’s struggle against Botswana was down to both their opponents’ determination and some complacency within his team.
“It was a combination of both. Botswana knew they had lost their first game, so they came all out. On our side, some of us were a bit complacent and took things for granted. That’s why the game played out the way it did.”

With midfielder Deborah Abiodun ruled out of the Algeria match due to suspension, Madugu insisted there is enough depth in the team:

“We are aware Deborah has two yellow cards and won’t play the next match. But that gives others a chance to step in and show what they can do. You can’t be the best without beating the best. It’s all part of the process.”

When asked about refereeing decisions during the match, Madugu chose a calm response:
“It’s not for us to judge the referees. They have assessors. Sometimes decisions go against you, but you just have to live with it and continue playing.”

The Super Falcons will face Algeria next, aiming to maintain their perfect record as they head into the knockout stages of WAFCON 2024.
