The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday.

The announcement follows President Bola Tinubu’s earlier declaration of a seven-day national mourning period in memory of the late Nigerian leader.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

According to the statement, the holiday is meant to honour Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic growth, his service to the nation, and the legacy he left behind.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the minister said.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the day to promote unity and peace, ideals he said Buhari consistently stood for throughout his time in office.

“As earlier announced, the national flags are to fly at half-mast for the seven-day mourning period from Sunday, 13th July, 2025.

“The Federal Government extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late president, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the statement added.

Buhari’s funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.
