Femi Adesina, former presidential spokesman, has stated that late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari might not have lived as long as he did if he had relied solely on Nigerian hospitals for medical care.

Speaking on Tuesday during Channels Television’s special coverage of Buhari’s funeral, Adesina defended the ex-president’s continued use of healthcare services in the United Kingdom, where he eventually passed away.

“Buhari could have been long dead if he had used Nigerian hospitals,” Adesina asserted, responding to public criticism over Buhari’s death in a London clinic.

He explained that the former president had been using UK medical facilities even before assuming office in 2015, and that continuity with the same doctors was important due to their knowledge of his medical history.

Adesina also pointed out the harsh reality facing the country’s health sector, noting that most Nigerian hospitals lacked the required infrastructure and specialized expertise to handle Buhari’s condition.

His controversial comment has renewed conversations about the state of Nigeria’s healthcare system, which has long suffered from underinvestment and medical brain drain.
