Dumebi Kachikwu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has alleged that Peter Obi is already considering exiting the ADC coalition, barely weeks after its launch.

Obi, who contested under the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 presidential election, had joined forces with other opposition figures in early July to relaunch the ADC as a coalition front against the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections. Just two days later, he publicly declared his intention to run again for president—without renouncing his LP membership.

Kachikwu, however, believes Obi has seen enough to reconsider his place in the coalition. He alleged that the ADC is being strategically repackaged to support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential bid.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kachikwu, who has repeatedly accused Atiku and others of hijacking the ADC, said Obi is beginning to understand that the coalition is not what it was made to appear.

“The whole ADC structure is being packaged for the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Since I started warning people about what is happening, we can see what is happening within the coalition. Someone like Mr Peter Obi now understands that the whole coalition was packaged for Atiku Ababakar. From our understanding, what we are seeing now is that he is looking in other directions, and other people who aspire to run now realise that the coalition was indeed no coalition. It was just a vehicle for Atiku Abubakar’s ambition.”

He further stated that the ADC cannot and will not be used to fulfil Atiku’s ambition.

According to Kachikwu, the 2027 elections must break free from the grip of elite manipulation.

He vowed to campaign vigorously against what he called political exploitation and to educate Nigerians about their right to choose credible leaders.
