In a surprising twist, All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Adamu Garba has publicly withdrawn his long-standing criticism of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, now describing him as a “worthy statesman.”
Garba, who was one of Obi’s most outspoken detractors during the heated 2023 general elections, made the statement in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday.
Of all those who criticised Peter Obi, I was perhaps the harshest,” Garba admitted. “Yet, he has managed to regroup and reassert himself in such a way that I find shockingly admirable. I won’t attack him anymore. He has earned my respect.”
The former Anambra State governor, who secured third place in the presidential race, continues to garner substantial support—especially among Nigerian youths and members of civil society. Many attribute his enduring popularity to his unwavering stance on good governance, fiscal discipline, and transparency in public office.
Despite operating from the opposition, Obi’s influence has remained strong, positioning him as a key voice in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Observers have noted that Garba’s public change of heart may signal a growing recognition of Obi’s impact across party lines.
