Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has voiced deep concern about the deteriorating conditions in Nigeria, highlighting the harsh realities faced by everyday citizens. In a recent interview, she stressed that her greatest worry isn’t rooted in statistics or economic indicators, but rather in the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians, many of whom are barely managing to survive.
Adichie emphasized that life has become painfully difficult, even for individuals who were once part of the secure middle class. She described how people who previously had stable jobs, could afford to pay school fees, or buy groceries without stress, are now grappling with rising costs, declining quality of life, and uncertainty about the future.
I can see it in how people who were formerly securely middle class—and not that life was rosy for them, but they got by—are now people who beg and who are in need. That worries me greatly,” she said.
