The All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised alarm over what it describes as a calculated attempt by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai to undermine Nigeria’s unity and stability for personal political gain.
In a statement released on Monday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, accused the duo of attempting to hijack the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of a broader plot to derail the country’s power rotation principle.
Morka blamed Atiku’s refusal to honour the zoning arrangement during the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries for what he termed the “virtual cremation” of the opposition party.
“It is now clear to all Nigerians that el-Rufai and his cohorts in ADC are on a mission to upend the presidential rotational principle designed to promote national unity and cohesion in the country through the imposition of Atiku as presidential candidate of ADC in the middle of a southern presidency turn,” Morka stated.
The ruling party was responding to el-Rufai’s scathing remarks made in Sokoto on Saturday, where he described President Bola Tinubu’s government as “incompetent,” “clannish,” and “undeserving of a second term.”
APC dismissed el-Rufai’s comments as “yet another outburst of a waspish politician,” insisting that Nigeria, under President Tinubu’s leadership, was experiencing a period of visionary and transformative governance.
The party restated its confidence in the Renewed Hope Agenda, asserting that the administration has repositioned the nation for sustained progress and development, and predicted that Nigerians would reaffirm their support for Tinubu in 2027.
