The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has intensified efforts to ensure effective citizens’ involvement in the upcoming Rivers State local government elections, slated for August 30, 2025, by holding a sensitization roundtable to educate and mobilize voters.

With the Rivers State local government elections approaching, the National Orientation Agency organized a stakeholder roundtable and sensitization event to encourage active and peaceful citizen participation. Addressing participants, Rivers State NOA Director Dr. Edward Banigo emphasized that the success of any election is rooted in the knowledge and mobilization of the electorate: “A well-informed and sufficiently mobilized citizenry is the key to credible democratic processes,” Dr. Banigo remarked.

The NOA is taking the lead on awareness creation and social mobilization throughout Rivers State, urging all eligible voters to participate responsibly in the August 30 local council polls. Dr. Banigo encouraged Rivers people to reject violence and fulfill their civic duties to ensure the restoration of democratic governance at the grassroots level.

The event also featured a security assurance from Rivers State Police Commissioner, CP Olubenga Adepoju, represented by ACP Okoro Ikechukwu, who reaffirmed the commitment of the police to maintain order before, during, and after the elections. “We are fully prepared to uphold law and order so people may vote freely and safely,” ACP Ikechukwu assured attendees.

The upcoming election marks a significant return to local democracy for Rivers State, following political instability and a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated previous council polls. The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced new guidelines and a revised electoral timetable to accommodate these challenges.

With robust efforts from NOA and security agencies, stakeholders hope for free, fair, and peaceful elections as Rivers State prepares for its August 30 local government vote.
