Nigeria has officially submitted its proposals to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030, entering the race to stage the historic sporting event.

The Nigerian Olympic Committee confirmed that the country has lodged a formal bid with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to bring the Games to Africa for the first time in its history. If successful, Nigeria would make history as the first African host of the multi-sport event, which would mark its 100th anniversary in 2030.

Canada, which hosted the very first Commonwealth Games in 1930 in Hamilton, was widely expected to be a leading contender to commemorate the centenary by hosting once again. However, Canadian sports authorities ultimately decided against submitting a bid, narrowing the field of competition.
India has also entered the race, submitting an official bid that will see it compete head-to-head with Nigeria for hosting rights. India last hosted the Games in 2010 in New Delhi, while Nigeria has never staged the event, despite being an active member of the Commonwealth sporting community for decades.

The Commonwealth Games Federation is expected to review the bids over the coming months, with a final decision on the 2030 host anticipated in due course.
