Britain has rocked global politics by officially recognising Palestine as a state, despite strong opposition from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine,” Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer declared on Sunday.

The move comes just months after Starmer warned Israel to end its “starvation tactics” in Gaza or risk London backing Palestinian statehood.

Canada and Australia joined the UK in recognition, following the path set last year by Ireland, Spain, and Norway.

Netanyahu, however, has vowed to fight the move, calling a Palestinian state a direct threat to Israel’s existence.

Analysts say the decision won’t change the battlefield overnight, but it sends a “powerful moral signal” that could reshape future peace talks, and even lead to a Palestinian embassy in London.
