On-loan Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has sent fans into ecstasy with a superb assist for Nigerian striker, Paul Onuachu, during Trabzonspor’s 1-1 draw against Gaziantep in a Turkish Super Lig clash on Saturday.
Onuachu scored his third goal of the season, thanks to the Manchester United outcast, who set him up with a delightful assist as Trabzonspor came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw in the game.
Onana’s maiden appearance for the Turkish club came last week, where he impressed after making eight saves, although his new club went on to lose 1-0 to Fenerbahce.
On Saturday, he brought his ball-playing credentials to the show, sending a pinpoint pass for Onuachu behind the opponent’s defence, and the striker made no mistake with the finish.
The former Southampton striker held off several defenders before slotting beyond the onrushing goalkeeper as Trabzonspor came back from behind to snatch a point against Gaziantep.
Football fans took to social media in awe of Onana’s performance.
An Abuja-based Unite fan, Satli, wrote, “Wonders shall never really end.”
Another fan with the username @Obediiodom wrote on X, “The only reason Onana was poor at United is because they didn’t allow him to play his way. You’ll never see a clip of him carrying the ball outside the box at United, but he did that regularly at Inter. United was the problem. Onana is a good goalkeeper.”
Everyone leaves Man U and then remembers how to play football,” @crypto_freakk07 also wrote on X.
On Facebook, some fans also suggested he wasn’t the problem at United, where he kept only 18 clean sheets in 72 EPL games.
“Onana was never the problem of Man Utd. He had had a stellar performance with Inter before coming to Man Utd. Much of Man Utd’s problems has to do with one administration, and secondly, Onana ‘s defence while with Man Utd,” Leftist Golden Akhidenor wrote.
“Thank God he is doing well, meaning Onana was not the problem at Man U. It was the defenders and players that were the problem,” Chinemerem Rich also said.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper put a pause on his nightmare spell at Old Trafford after completing a season-long loan move to the Turkish Super Lig towards the end of the summer transfer window.
Before the move, Onana had appeared in just one game for United this season, their Carabao Cup second-round exit against fourth-tier side Grimsby Town, where he made several mistakes as they were knocked out on penalties.
The 29-year-old will be back in action for Trabzonspor on September 27 as they host Fatih Karagumruk in a Super Lig clash.
Onuachu now has three goals in six games this season after completing a permanent move from Southampton.
