Shock and grief have gripped Nigeria’s media world after ARISE News anchor Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu was killed in a brutal armed robbery at her Katampe home in Abuja.

The 29-year-old rising star, fondly known as “Sommie,” was attacked in the early hours of Monday.

ARISE News mourned “a cherished member of the ARISE News family” whose voice “engaged and connected with our viewers.”

The station added, “Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”

Police say investigations are underway to track down those behind the killing.

Born December 26, 1995, Maduagwu trained as a lawyer before breaking into broadcast journalism, where she became a vibrant on-screen presence admired nationwide.

Her death has been described as a devastating loss to ARISE News and the wider Nigerian media community.
