After a decade at the helm of Nigeria’s electoral body, Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially stepped down as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Yakubu, who completed his second five-year term, handed over to National Commissioner May Agbamuche on Tuesday to steer the commission in an acting capacity.
In a brief handover ceremony, Yakubu urged INEC officials to support Agbamuche as she assumes leadership until President Bola Tinubu appoints a substantive chairman.
“The Commission must continue to uphold transparency, fairness and credibility,” Yakubu advised his former colleagues before departing.
Presidency sources hinted that the appointment of a new INEC Chairman will be one of the key items on the agenda when the Council of State meets later this week.
