A new ceasefire agreement reached in Egypt calls for Israel to partially withdraw its forces from Gaza and for Hamas to release the remaining hostages it currently holds.

The deal, brokered after weeks of intense mediation involving Egyptian, Qatari, and U.S. officials, marks a pivotal moment in efforts to end months of violence in Gaza. Under the terms discussed, Israel will begin a phased withdrawal from several areas of the territory, while Hamas is expected to start releasing hostages as a gesture of compliance once the agreement takes effect.

Despite the breakthrough, major challenges remain. Key issues including the process for disarming Hamas, establishing long-term security controls, and deciding the future administrative structure of Gaza have yet to be resolved and are expected to be the focus of follow-up negotiations.

Diplomatic sources described the deal as a preliminary framework rather than a final settlement, emphasizing that it aims to halt fighting and create conditions for broader political dialogue. The agreement’s success will depend largely on the willingness of both sides to implement initial steps and participate in further talks under international supervision.

Regional leaders have welcomed the development but stressed that lasting peace will require a sustainable security arrangement and a clear governance plan for Gaza’s post-war future.
