Former President Joe Biden has entered a new, intensive phase of treatment for prostate cancer, starting radiation therapy and hormone treatment months after announcing his diagnosis in May, according to his spokesperson.

Biden, 82, is undergoing these therapies to address an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones, health aides confirmed this weekend. The five-week radiation course marks a critical escalation in his cancer care, supplementing earlier hormone pill regimens. His current treatment follows a recent surgery to remove skin cancer lesions from his forehead, during which physicians reported all cancerous tissue had been successfully removed.

In May, Biden’s office disclosed the diagnosis of a hormone-sensitive, high-grade cancer with a Gleason score of 9, signaling one of the most aggressive possible types but with potential for effective response to combined therapies.

Medical experts say hormone therapy is commonly used to shrink tumors and slow cancer progression, while radiation aims to destroy remaining malignant cells.

Biden, who will soon turn 83, expressed gratitude for public support while acknowledging cancer’s wide impact on families everywhere. Reports indicate the former president is “doing well” and responding positively to the treatment, despite the seriousness of the diagnosis.

Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer among men and is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. While Biden’s team is optimistic about the treatment’s prospects, doctors emphasize that advanced-stage prostate cancer requires persistent management and monitoring.
