The U.S. Secret Service confirmed late Tuesday night that an individual was taken into custody after crashing a vehicle into an exterior checkpoint near the White House. No injuries were reported, and the vehicle was declared safe after inspection.
At approximately 10:37 p.m., a vehicle rammed into the Secret Service’s security gate at 17th Street and E Street NW in Washington, D.C., according to an official statement from the agency. The driver was immediately apprehended by agents on duty, and the vehicle was promptly examined by security personnel and determined to be safe.
“The individual was arrested and the vehicle was assessed and deemed safe. Our investigation into the cause of this collision is ongoing,” the Secret Service said in its statement.
Authorities have not released the name or motive of the driver. The incident did not result in any reported injuries, and there was no breach of the White House grounds.
Traffic in the area was temporarily restricted as security teams cleared the scene and continued their investigation. Law enforcement officials are working to determine whether the crash was intentional or accidental.
