President Trump Terminates Trade Negotiations With Canada, Citing “Fake” Reagan Ad and Interference Claims

President Donald J. Trump announced  that the United States is ending all trade negotiations with Canada, accusing the Canadian government of promoting a “fake advertisement” featuring former President Ronald Reagan and attempting to interfere with U.S. Supreme Court decisions on tariffs.

In a statement released from the White House, President Trump said Canada’s recent actions had “crossed a line,” alleging that an online video depicting Reagan criticizing U.S. tariff policy was fabricated to sway public perception. He called the advertisement “FAKE” and said it represented a broader attempt by Canada to influence ongoing U.S. trade and judicial deliberations.

“Canada has repeatedly acted in bad faith,” the President said. “They are using a fake Ronald Reagan ad to attack our tariff policy and trying to interfere with the independent decisions of our Supreme Court. We will not tolerate this behavior.”

Canadian officials have yet to respond publicly, though a spokesperson for the Canadian Ministry of International Trade denied any involvement in the disputed advertisement, calling the claim “unfounded and disappointing.”

The termination of trade talks marks a sharp escalation in tensions between Washington and Ottawa, following months of friction over agricultural exports, energy policy, and recent tariff rulings. Economists warn the breakdown could disrupt cross-border supply chains and delay pending trade agreements that were under review since early 2025.

Meanwhile, members of Congress from both parties urged restraint. Several senators called for an independent review of the claims while emphasizing the importance of maintaining stable trade relations with America’s northern neighbor.

The White House indicated no plans to reopen communications unless Canada “formally acknowledges and withdraws” the disputed advertisement.
