After months of intensive treatment and prayer, 12-year-old Sophia Forchas, who survived a gunshot wound to the head during the tragic attack at Annunciation Church, has been released from St. Helena Medical Center to the cheers of her family and community.
Sophia Forchas, struck by a bullet during the mid-April mass shooting that left several parishioners injured, walked out of the hospital on Saturday, smiling and holding her parents’ hands. Doctors described her recovery as “remarkable,” noting that she had defied early medical expectations.
Her parents, Robert and Angela Forchas, expressed deep gratitude, calling their daughter’s recovery “a living testimony to the miraculous power of prayer.” They thanked the medical staff, community members, and local churches who had supported them since the tragedy.
Hospital officials confirmed that Sophia will continue outpatient rehabilitation to aid her full recovery but said her progress has exceeded projections. “Sophia’s spirit has inspired everyone who has cared for her,” said Dr. Elaine Ortiz, chief of neurosurgery at St. Helena.
Local residents gathered near the hospital to welcome Sophia home, many holding signs and candles. A special thanksgiving service is planned at Annunciation Church next weekend to celebrate her recovery and honor all victims of the attack.
