California Governor Gavin Newsom has hinted that he is seriously considering a run for the U.S. presidency after the 2026 midterm elections, admitting he would be “lying” if he claimed otherwise.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday, Newsom acknowledged that national politics remain on his radar and that he intends to reflect deeply on his future once California’s next election cycle concludes. His comments mark the clearest indication yet that the two-term governor may seek the Democratic nomination for the 2028 presidential race.

“I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t crossed my mind,” Newsom said, noting that his immediate focus remains on California’s economic recovery, housing challenges, and wildfire prevention efforts. However, he emphasized that the 2026 midterms will serve as a natural point to reassess his political trajectory.

Political analysts have long speculated about Newsom’s presidential ambitions, given his national profile, progressive agenda, and frequent public appearances alongside other Democratic leaders. His potential candidacy could reshape the early field for 2028, especially as the party looks to regroup after President Trump’s 2024 re-election victory.

For now, Newsom maintains that his commitment to California remains steadfast but left little doubt that broader ambitions are in play.
