Google has reached an agreement to help reopen a nuclear power station in Iowa, aiming to secure a major boost in clean electricity for its growing network of U.S. data centers.

The deal marks a significant move by Google to expand its renewable and zero-carbon energy sources as demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing surges. The company is partnering with energy providers to bring the long-idled Duane Arnold Energy Center back online, converting it into a key power source for its Midwest operations.

According to company officials, the project will help stabilize energy supplies to Google’s data centers while supporting the company’s goal of operating entirely on carbon-free energy by 2030. The initiative also signals a broader trend among major tech firms seeking resilient, low-emission power options to support the rapid growth of digital infrastructure.

State officials in Iowa have welcomed the project, noting that reopening the nuclear facility will create new jobs and reinforce the state’s role as an emerging hub for clean energy innovation and advanced technology development.
