President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Nigeria, cautioning that the United States could take military action if the West African nation fails to curb ongoing attacks against Christian communities by Islamic militants.
Speaking from the White House on Saturday, President Trump declared that he had directed the Department of War to begin preparations for a potential strike, citing what he described as persistent violence targeting Christians in Nigeria.
“I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians,” Trump said during televised remarks.
The president’s comments mark one of the strongest warnings yet from Washington to Abuja, reflecting increasing frustration within U.S. circles over what officials describe as Nigeria’s failure to protect vulnerable religious groups. American intelligence reports have long pointed to a rise in extremist activity across Nigeria’s northern and central regions, where militant groups have carried out repeated attacks on villages and churches.
Nigerian authorities have yet to officially respond to the president’s remarks, though diplomats have confirmed that emergency consultations are underway in Abuja.
