President Donald Trump commended Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, saying he hears the leader is “doing a very good job” as the war-torn country undergoes historic transition from decades of dictatorship.

During remarks at a White House briefing, President Trump acknowledged the recent shift in Syria’s leadership after Bashar al-Assad’s regime was overthrown in December 2024, noting, “I’m hearing Syria’s new president is doing a very good job under extremely difficult circumstances.”

Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly a rebel commander, assumed the presidency in January 2025 and has since steered the country through a turbulent transition, forming an interim government and pledging to restore civil order and rebuild Syria’s shattered institutions. Analysts have noted considerable shifts in foreign policy, with Syria opening dialogue with the United States and planning to join the coalition against ISIS.

“President al-Sharaa has surprised many with his diplomatic efforts, including preparing for an upcoming visit to Washington and prioritizing reconciliation at home,” Trump said, as the United States considers easing sanctions to support Syria’s rebuilding efforts.

The international community is closely watching the new Syrian administration, which faces ongoing conflict, economic hardship, and the formidable task of reconciling former political adversaries.
