China has fired a warning shot at the United States, telling Washington to stay out of Nigeria’s internal affairs after President Donald Trump threatened military action over alleged persecution of Christians.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ningdeclared that Beijing fully supports President Bola Tinubu’s government and opposes any form of foreign interference.
“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force,” Mao said.
She added that China “firmly supports the Tinubu administration as it leads its people on the development path suited to its national conditions.”
Beijing’s vehement warning comes amid global tension generated by Trump’s remarks, which have drawn backlash from nations warning against turning Africa’s internal issues into geopolitical power games.
