The Vatican has thrown the Catholic world into shock with a new decree banning the use of the title “co-redeemer” for the Virgin Mary, a title cherished by millions for centuries.

Approved by Pope Leo, the explosive decree makes it clear: only Jesus Christ redeemed the world.

For generations, Catholics have hailed Mary as “co-redemptrix” and “mediatrix,” praying through her with rosary beads and believing her divine motherhood elevated her close to God’s power.

But the Vatican now says those titles distort the truth of the Christian faith.

“Given the necessity of explaining Mary’s subordinate role to Christ in the work of Redemption, it is always inappropriate to use the title ‘Co-redemptrix’ to define Mary’s cooperation,” the decree reads.

“This title risks obscuring Christ’s unique salvific mediation and can therefore create confusion and an imbalance in the harmony of the truths of the Christian faith… it does not serve the faith of the People of God and becomes unhelpful.”

The Vatican insists Mary’s role, though profound, was “subordinate” to Jesus. Neither she nor the Church can replace or perfect the redemption brought by Christ.

The decree also takes aim at the title “mediatrix,” reaffirming that only Jesus is the true mediator between God and man. While acknowledging that Mary’s motherhood gave her a “real mediatory role,” it stresses that it was entirely secondary.

This isn’t the first time the Vatican has pushed back against the “co-redeemer” label.

Pope Francis, long before his death, dismissed the idea with fiery clarity.

“Christ is the Mediator, the bridge that we cross to turn to the Father. He is the only Redeemer: there are no co-redeemers with Christ. He is the Mediator par excellence,” Francis said in 2021.

“He is the Mediator. Each prayer we raise to God is through Christ, with Christ and in Christ, and is fulfilled thanks to his intercession,” he added that same year.

Francis had once blasted the idea outright, calling it “foolishness.”
