Labour Party (LP) candidate, George Moghalu, suffered a political upset on Saturday after losing his polling unit to Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Anambra governorship election.
At polling unit 017 in Uruagu Ward 1, Nnewi North Local Government Area, which has 463 registered voters, only 86 were accredited. Soludo emerged victorious with 57 votes, while Moghalu managed 22.
Speaking earlier at his residence in Nnewi North, Moghalu expressed frustration over reports of rampant vote-buying despite the heavy presence of security operatives.
“The situation is scandalous and very embarrassing. The issue of vote-buying is no more a speculation. It happened very aggressively in the last by-election. This time around, I’ve been receiving reports of the same thing happening,” he said.
While Moghalu condemned the conduct of the election, Soludo hailed it as largely peaceful, noting that only minor technical issues were recorded.
He said reports from across the state showed that voting went on without major disruption.
“I got a report from Orumba South that the BVAS wasn’t working as expected. But all said and done, I think, on the average, it is going on smoothly,” Soludo stated.
