The Trump administration is exploring a proposal to purchase large, unused warehouse complexes near key deportation hubs and convert them into expansive immigrant detention centers managed directly by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to officials familiar with internal discussions, the proposed facilities described as “mega detention centers”—would represent a major shift in U.S. immigration enforcement infrastructure. The centers would significantly increase ICE’s capacity to house detainees and reduce reliance on private prison contractors that currently manage much of the system.

The idea reportedly involves acquiring Amazon-style fulfillment warehouses and retrofitting them to accommodate thousands of detainees. These sites would be positioned near major airports and transportation corridors to streamline deportation logistics and administrative processing.

While supporters within the administration argue the plan could improve oversight and cost efficiency, critics warn it may further entrench mass detention practices and raise human rights concerns. Immigrant advocacy groups have already called for transparency on the plan’s details.

Officials stressed that the proposal remains preliminary. No final decisions have been made regarding specific locations, financing, or timeline. A White House spokesperson said the administration is “evaluating all options to ensure safe, lawful, and efficient enforcement of immigration policy.”
