President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a high-powered delegation to the United Kingdom to press for action on the detention of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

The team, which met with top officials at the UK Ministry of Justice, included Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi.

After the talks, the delegation was received at the Nigerian High Commission in London by Acting High Commissioner Mohammed Maidugu, highlighting the seriousness of Nigeria’s diplomatic intervention.

The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of legal clashes between the UK and Nigeria over high-profile cases involving prominent political figures.

Senator Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a doctor were convicted in March 2023 for conspiring to bring a young man to the UK to exploit him for his kidney under the Modern Slavery Act.

Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison, a historic ruling that sent shockwaves worldwide, underscoring that even powerful politicians are not above the law.
