Negotiations between Switzerland and the United States could soon deliver a breakthrough agreement slashing tariffs on Swiss exports from 39% down to 15%, provided President Donald Trump gives his formal approval in the coming days.

Swiss and American negotiators have been engaged in high-level talks in Washington this week to resolve longstanding tariff disputes and deepen economic cooperation between the two countries. The proposed deal would dramatically lower U.S. duties on a broad range of Swiss goods, including machinery, pharmaceuticals, and specialty foods, potentially boosting exports by hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

The Swiss Ministry of Finance confirmed that an agreement was “within reach,” emphasizing that both governments are prioritizing measures to support businesses and spur post-pandemic recovery. Final approval rests with President Trump, who is reportedly reviewing the deal’s terms ahead of his scheduled White House meeting with Swiss President Viola Amherd on Friday.

Analysts note that a reduction in tariffs would benefit U.S. businesses as well, lowering costs for imported components and supporting the growth of joint ventures in advanced manufacturing and research. If signed, the pact would mark one of the most significant U.S.–Swiss trade reforms in recent years, with immediate implications for global supply chains and bilateral investment.
