In a bid to improve working conditions for Nigerian dockworkers, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, in partnership with the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, hosted the 2025 Day of the Dockworker in Lagos.

Held under the theme “Safe Port, Safe Ship,” the event highlighted the importance of safe working conditions and the welfare of Nigerian dockworkers, while showcasing government initiatives to enhance safety standards, according to a statement by NIMASA on Wednesday.

In his keynote address, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, praised the exceptional work of dockworkers, noting that their contribution is central to Nigeria’s maritime economy.

Represented at the event by NIMASA Director-General Dr Dayo Mobereola, the minister said, “Today reminds us that our dockworkers are vital to creating a maritime industry where safety is assured and productivity increases. As dockworkers, you are the first link in the trade chain that fuels our economy and turns the potential of the blue economy into real national growth.”

Oyetola added that the Federal Government has launched safety and capacity-building programmes, including providing modern protective equipment for dockworkers and riverine transport operators. Through NIMASA, the government is enhancing safety training, improving emergency response capabilities, and strengthening professional development schemes.

Also speaking, President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Francis Bunu, commended the minister and his agencies for prioritizing dockworkers’ welfare.
