Ibadan turned into a political billboard on Friday as massive banners promoting Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde for the 2027 presidency dominated the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention.
At the Adamasingba Stadium, now the epicentre of the party’s 2025 elective convention, towering posters bearing Makinde’s face welcomed delegates from across the country.
One banner, mounted by a group called Lana Fun Seyi, screamed, “Seyi Makinde for President.”
Another, signed by PDP member Fapetu Stephen, boldly declared, “Relax, Seyi Makinde will fix Nigeria 2027.”
The displays have reignited speculation that Makinde is quietly positioning himself for a presidential run, despite his earlier stance that he would “declare his ambition when he is ready” and does not need anyone’s approval to speak for himself.
The convention grounds were also splashed with posters of Kabiru Turaki, vying for national chairman, and Taofeek Arapaja, seeking the national secretary slot, as support groups and state chapters battled for visibility ahead of the two-day event.
But the excitement comes amid legal turbulence.
An Oyo high court last week gave the go-ahead for preparations, while an Abuja high court later barred the PDP and INEC from conducting or recognising the event.
Adding to the confusion, a faction led by Sam Anyanwu announced the convention had been postponed, a claim immediately dismissed by the Damagum-led leadership, insisting the gathering will proceed as scheduled.
