Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), registering as a member in Adamawa State on Monday, in what could be a win in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of 2027.
The former VP’s announcement over the weekend set the stage, and Abdul Rasheeth, Atiku’s aide, confirmed the registration in a statement.
Footage and photos from the event captured scenes of jubilation, with supporters beating drums, singing, and waving placards with Atiku’s image as his convoy rolled into town. Atiku waved to the crowd from his vehicle and proudly received his ADC membership card.
In a brief X (formerly Twitter) post shortly after the registration, Atiku wrote, “It’s official. -AA”
The registration formalises Atiku’s alliance with the coalition party he had endorsed in July as a platform for opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal, to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Political watchers note that Atiku’s move is expected to significantly strengthen the ADC, consolidate opposition forces, and inject fresh energy into the race for the next general election.
