Cameroon’s opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary has fled to The Gambia for his safety, following disputed presidential election results and mounting unrest in his home country.

Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who contested the outcome of Cameroon’s October presidential election, arrived in The Gambia on November 7 after reportedly facing threats and mounting pressure following violent protests against the reelection of President Paul Biya. The Gambian government confirmed Bakary’s presence, stating he was admitted on humanitarian grounds and his stay is strictly temporary as diplomatic efforts continue to seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.

Bakary maintains that the election was marred by fraud, declaring himself the rightful winner and urging his supporters to demonstrate against official results. At least five people were reported dead in clashes, with opposition groups claiming the real toll is higher. The Gambia is now coordinating with regional partners to find a negotiated solution and has emphasized its commitment to peace and regional stability.
