Any player who requires medical treatment on the pitch must now leave the field of play for a mandatory two-minute period under a new rule announced by FIFA, which will be tested for the first time during the Arab Cup as part of efforts to speed up the game.

FIFA said the measure is designed to discourage time-wasting and reduce lengthy stoppages by ensuring that medical checks take place off the pitch while play continues. Under the protocol, once the referee authorizes medical staff to enter the field, the injured player must exit and remain on the touchline or in the technical area for at least two minutes before being allowed to rejoin the match, leaving their team temporarily a player short.

The world governing body has framed the change as an experiment aimed at improving “game flow” rather than altering the core Laws of the Game, and it will use data from the Arab Cup to assess its impact on playing time, fairness and player safety. Coaches and medical teams will be monitored to ensure compliance, and referees will receive guidance on how to manage situations where players suffer more serious injuries or potential head knocks that may need longer evaluation.

Reactions from within the sport are mixed, with supporters insisting the rule will limit tactical interruptions, while critics warn it could pressure players to remain on their feet to avoid weakening their team, potentially clashing with efforts to prioritize health and welfare. The trial’s findings will be reviewed by football’s rule-makers before any decision is taken on whether to expand the rule to other FIFA competitions or domestic leagues.
