The Presidency has urged Nigerians to play an active role in enforcing President Bola Tinubu’s directive ordering the withdrawal of police escorts from VIPs across the country.
Daniel Bwala, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, made the appeal during an interview on TVC on Sunday.
He stressed that public participation is crucial for ensuring full compliance, encouraging citizens to document and report any breaches of the order.
“If you identify a celebrity, a private sector person, or any individual who has police against the executive order of the president, as much as you can, capture evidence, whether a photograph or video,” Bwala said.
He further clarified that the directive is not a blanket withdrawal of security personnel from all government officials.
“The order of the president to withdraw police from VIPs is not all-encompassing. There are critical people in government who will still have one form of security or another,” he explained.
According to Bwala, alternative security arrangements, including personnel from the State Security Service (SSS) and the Civil Defence, will be deployed where necessary.
“It could be SSS, Civil Defence, and not the police who will be there to help you. But police have no business being with you,” he said.
The move underscores the administration’s renewed drive to optimise police resources and reposition the force toward core public safety responsibilities.
It would be recalled that Tinubu ordered the withdrawal of police officers attached to VIPs nationwide, directing that the officers be reassigned to essential policing duties.
