Former Zamfara Central Senator Kabiru Marafa has ignited political firestorms after openly supporting Donald Trump’s threat of possible US military action in Nigeria, arguing that the warning might be exactly what the country needs to tame worsening insecurity.

Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Marafa did not mince words, saying, “I strongly support the President of America, Donald Trump, for issuing that threat,” he said, dismissing widespread criticism from Nigerians who viewed Trump’s comments as an attack on national sovereignty.”

“I differ with a lot of Nigerians because most Nigerians look at it from the perspective of sovereignty, patriotism, which I subscribe to. But of what importance is sovereignty to a dead man?” he added.

Marafa insisted Trump’s explosive warnings had forced global attention back on Nigeria’s deadly attacks, especially those targeting Christians.

Trump’s threat followed his order to the Pentagon last month to begin preparing for potential strikes in Nigeria. In a blistering social-media message, he warned Washington “may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” vowing any action would be “fast, vicious, and sweet.”

He also threatened to cut off all US aid if the killings continued.

Marafa argued that protecting lives must come before any talk of sovereignty and claimed Trump’s comments had effectively put the Nigerian government “under pressure to act decisively.”

Nigeria has since been designated by the US as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious-freedom violations, a move that has further heightened tensions.
